Encouraging and implementing diversity at workplaces… equal opportunity for all

Diversity at a workplace or in an organization means the presence of different individuals working together to achieve common set goals.  Implementing diversity in an organization may come with its hindrances and benefits.

Several businesses have asserted that diversity is good for business and that an organization that works towards combating discrimination and harassment in the workplace will have the competitive edge over other businesses.  An organization that is open to diversity is most likely to attract more employees than one which does not address the problems associated with diversity.

Ghana, a country located in West Africa diversity is being encouraged by the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), an office set up by the government to oversee issues of diversity in all workplaces in the country. There are several tribes in Ghana that make up the entire population . Some individuals had the mindset that the place for a woman is the kitchen, thus creating a low diversity at workplaces where females could most likely do the work of their male counterparts. However, with the implementation of rules put in place by the commission, there has been fair distribution of gender in work places.

The benefit of having diversity in an organization is that all different groups of people bring unique ideas which are productive and will benefit the organization in the long run. All different ideas when collected from various individuals go a long way to ensure high productivity of the organization.  We live in an era when creativity, flexibility and innovations are the key to an organization’s success. The absence of diversity will mean that an organization will not achieve competitiveness in the market, thus making the subject a top priority to deal with.  In the United States there are organizations that see to it that diversity is implemented in all areas of the workforce. Within the past ten years, diversity has been a hot topic among corporate organizations.

One can say that implementing diversity in organizations can be very challenging. Employers and employees alike find themselves at the receiving end when issues regarding diversity are raised and discussed. While some may openly embrace the idea, others may oppose it for unknown reasons. The feeling of uneasiness that may come as a result of diversity implementation could be countered by education, the true way to communicate ideas to other individuals with impact. Since the positive side to implementing diversity in organizations or companies out weighs the negative side of diversity as stated above, the subject should be encouraged in all organization which seeks growth and competitiveness in the working environment.
